How to Hang a Cowhide Without Nails

Do you like the look of a cowhide rug displayed on your wall, but are concerned about damaging the rug? Interior design experts say that while nailing the rug is the most common method for mounting your cowhide rug to the wall, it certainly isn’t the only option.

Here is how to hang a cowhide without nails.

Hanging with a rug casing

A rug casing is a great way to protect your cowhide rug while it is hanging on a wall. A combination of a casing and rod hooks is a relatively simple way to hang your cowhide rug without nails.

  1. Mount the rod hooks onto the wall. This might require drilling screws into the wall, but at least it will just be in one spot on the wall. Be sure to measure the length of the rod against the back of your rug.
  2. Determine the orientation of the rug, how you want it to look like on the wall. Cowhide has an irregular pattern so you want to make sure it is displayed in a sophisticated manner.
  3. Next you need to sew a casing which is basically a long, banded piece of fabric to the back of the rug. Choose a sturdy material like cotton or linen. Make sure there is still at least one or two inches of space left at each end of the rug for the edge of the rod.
  4. Create a mounting band for the rod and sew it into the casing. Check to make sure the rod has enough room to slide easily in and out but still a snug fit.
  5. Experts recommend that you paint the wood or metal rod before inserting it to make sure it won’t damage the casing or rug with acids or rust.
  6. Insert the rod into the mounting band and hang your rug on the hooks already attached to the wall.

Another option is to just use rod hooks that you sew directly onto the back of the rug. If you do this, be sure to sew only into the back of the rug so the stitch does not show on the front of the rug. With either method, you will prevent a lot of damage to your wall and to your rug.

You can also use rug hangers that clamp on the rug and then are screwed onto the wall like this.
