6 Little Know Home Decor Tips From the Pros

Do you love decorating your home and are always on the lookout for new items to 'freshen up' the look of your home? Do you love doing home décor projects yourself?

Then you probably have a few home decors experts that you follow religiously. There is still a lot of cool design tips out there though that you might not have come across yet. Here are 6 little known home décor tips from the pros.

1. The Bedspread vs. The Coverlet

Have you ever wondered which you should adorn your bed with, a bedspread or a coverlet? Annie Selke, founder and designer of Pine Cone Hill, Dash & Albert and Annie Selke Luxe says that the bedspread because it extends all the way to the ground is for more traditionally styled rooms. She still recommends a bed skirt with it though. For more modern rooms Selke says the coverlet is a better fit.

2. A Taller More Elegant Room

If you have always wanted taller, more elegant rooms, don't worry. You don't need to buy a new house to get it. Jan Showers, a Dallas-based interior designer and Todd Romano, a New York designer, say that you can get that feeling of height with a little magical illusion by adding mirrors, buying shorter, wider furniture as opposed to tall pieces and by creating a taller doorway. If you have several doorways, it is a good idea to raise and align all of them.

3. A More Sophisticated Way to Organize

Let's face it. We all have too many things. From clothes to pots and pans to books, movies and of course the kids' toys and electronics. It can be hard to manage all the ensuing clutter. Your natural inclination is probably to find cabinets, closets and storage ottmans to get everything out of sight and mind, but Chip and Joanna Gaines from HGTV's Fixer Upper say that open shelving is a more sophisticated way to organize. They prefer 3-inch thick floating shelves with no shelf brackets for clean, simple lines. Of course with open shelving you will need to be more proactive about keeping everything in its rightful place so the shelves don't look messy.

4. It Should Be More about Feelings

When decorating and renovating your home, it is so easy to get caught up on how the space is going to look that you get bogged down in all the little details and lose sight of the overall aesthetic. Interior designer Victoria Hagan believes how your home makes you feel is the most important question to ask and the one that she always asks her clients.

5. Collections Should Come from Love

Most of us have one or two collections at home, whether it is of books, paintings or snow globes. You might be a little wary of having too many collections, but British designer Luke Edward Hall says not to be. The king of whimsy he says that when you come across something you love, you shouldn't worry about if it is valuable enough or how you will display it, just go with your gut feeling. If you love it, you will have fun displaying it just right in your home and you will have a cool story to tell of how you got the piece.

6. Cowhide Is More Functional Than You Think

When you think of cowhide rugs, you probably imagine them to be these luxurious items that you only find in the homes of the rich and famous and that they are fragile and hard to take care of. This is so far from the truth though. Heather Scott of Heather Scott Home & Design loves to use cowhide rugs in high traffic area, even entryways, because these rugs are so durable and easy to clean.

They can easily add some elegance and warmth to a utilitarian space like a home entryway, but also be very functional as well. Cowhide rugs and withstand all the traffic and dirt coming in as long as you take good care of them. Luckily they can easily be cleaned with a damp rag or with a quick vacuum.
