We all need a spot in the house that is just ours or maybe ours and our spouse’s where we can relax and destress from our day. A spot that reflects our personality and has all our favorite things.

Check out these 8 ways to create the master bedroom of your dreams:

1. Keep It Kid-Free

First things first, keep your bedroom a kids-free zone as much as possible. While it might not be practical to make your bedroom a complete kids-free zone, you should at least have certain times of the day where you can escape to your room and relax without any interruption even if it has to be after the little ones are all in bed for the night.

2. Time for the Clutter to Go

If you are surrounded by piles of laundry, the kids’ toys, paperwork, you name it, it is really hard to relax. Whether you are want some “alone time” with your partner or just want to snuggle down into the covers and read a good book, you want a clutter-free room.

Don’t let piles of clutter overwhelm you. You can easily tackle it all by doing it strategically. First do one big cleanup/organization to get rid of the big messes and then just do little cleanups every day to keep things from building up again. Also make sure you dust and vacuum your bedroom regularly to make the room as inviting as possible.

3. Showcase Your Bed

Your bed should always be the centerpiece of the room and it should be both comfortable and stylish. Whether you are in the market for a new bed or just want freshen up your old one, you want the bed to beckon you when you walk into the room.

If you are buying new, make sure the bed is large enough for you to sleep comfortably in, but not too large that it takes up the whole room. There are a lot of different styles out there, choose one that fits the theme of the whole room.

The linens you use to make up the bed can also contribute to the overall look and feel of your master bedroom. To make the bed pop more, layer the linens, mixing different textures and colors and patterns. Just make sure there is some element that unites all the pieces. Adds some soft and inviting blankets and comforters too.

4. Must Be Functional

Besides the bed, every bedroom needs places to store your clothes and other accessories. If you don’t have enough storage space, you might end up living in a disaster of a room with piles and piles everywhere. Make sure to choose dressers and chests of drawers that have both beautiful form and function.

Also, think about carving out space in your bedroom to be able to do some work whether it is school work, work on a hobby, or just paying bills and getting a handle on all that paperwork.

5. Little Details Count Too

Also don’t forget the little details that can help set the mood of the room. They can really add to the style and function of the room as well. Bookshelves, hampers, end tables, these are also all great additions to the bedroom. In your master suite, a lingerie chest and a dressing bench are also nice little touches. Nothing wrong with making it easy to dress in style, right?

Accent pillows on the bed and any chairs you might have in the room are also great. Consider a cowhide pillow for a little pizazz.

6. Don’t be Afraid of Florals

Floral wallpaper can really set a romantic tone in your master bedroom, but if you are worried that it would be too much, then you can also just make sure you have fresh flowers on your bedside table or bureau to keep your room feeling fresh and colorful.

7. Set the Right Lighting

The lighting in a room, especially the bedroom, can really set the right or wrong mood. Experts says that bedrooms should have three sources of lighting, usually two bedside lamps and an overhead light. For a real showstopper, hang a chandelier in the center of the room.

8. Add Sophistication with Cowhide

A cowhide rug is also a perfect addition to your master bedroom. Cowhide rugs denote luxury and sophistication as well as romance. Between the rich colors and patterns and the soft texture, a cowhide rug truly enhances any room. Consider putting one by the bed or if you have a chair and fireplace in the room, that is also a great place for one.

Most commonly natural cowhide rugs come in black, white, brown and white, tri-color, brown-white and black, and brindle. If you are more adventurous, you can even get cowhide rugs dyed a bright color like pink or one that is acid metallic washed. They even come in patchwork.
