Western style interior designs can be incredibly stylish, and the décor has had a quick uptick in popularity in recent years.

The trend can be used in plenty of types of homes including lodges, cabins and on ranches. One of the biggest advantages to using Western style designs is that they really serve to cozy up any space.

When you conjure images of Western interior designs, you probably immediately think of cowhide rugs and pillows, wood and leather accents, warm colors, and rich textures. It doesn’t get much cozier than that.

If you want to cozy up your space and use some Western-inspired designs to do so, consider the following examples.

1. Use Vibrant Colors

Using a color palette full of warm, vibrant hues can cozy up any living space. It can also give you a real, Western feel. Those colors can include deep browns and a bunch of sandy, warm colors. Then, add in some greens, bright reds, and sky blues.

If you want to use this color palette, consider including a lot of natural materials in the space. This includes genuine leather, stone, wood, and wrought iron. You don’t have to stick to one material, since the theme of the room relates more to the colors than the materials.

With those colors on the wall, decorating the space with furniture and accents can be really fun. Picture a beautiful leather couch and loveseat with a nice wood coffee table between them. Add in a rustic chandelier above, some animal artifacts scattered around the room and a beautiful cowhide rug under the coffee table to tie it all together.

You can even add in a nice ottoman that matches your color scheme. If you have a large window available, using very long window treatments in your color palette can also cozy up the room.

2. Stick to an Animal Theme

Some Western interior designs will include sticking with one animal and using accents from that animal to tie the room together. It can be easy to do this, for example, with horses or cows. With horses, you can purchase beautiful leather couches with horse images on them. These couches are usually a mix of cloth and leather.

Then tie the room together with pictures and other horse accents scattered around the room.

If your preference is cows, there is nothing that ties a room together better than a gorgeous, heavy cowhide rug resting beneath a rustic coffee table. Add in some scattered, comfortable cowhide pillows and the room becomes a warm, inviting place to host company or just relax. With this theme, you are freer to use whatever sofas you’d prefer.

The coffee table should be rustic to stick with the theme, but you don’t need much other than the cowhide accent pieces.

3. Modernize the Space

When some people think of Western style interior designs, they think of trends that were popular decades ago. That doesn’t have to be the case, though. There are plenty of modern twists on the more traditional Western styles.

You can use a modern white leather couch to brighten any space. This is a deviation from the darker leather that most think of when they picture Western styled spaces. Using white can brighten spaces really well. In traditional Western styles, rooms are typically quite dark. This is because the furniture matierals used are usually dark in color and wood itself makes any room darker.

Add in some beautiful cowhide pillows on the white couch as accent pieces. Then, you can use cubic seats in place of a coffee table. This is a modern twist on the traditional table. These seats can be in animal print or even in cowhide, which can really tie the room together.

Finally, add some animalistic paintings or pictures on the wall and throw down a cowhide rug. The room comes together in a perfectly Western themed way, but it does so with a modern twist. It isn’t too ornate but still nails the theme. It also functions as a really comfortable space.

4. Use a lot of Wood

Wood is one of the most traditional materials used in Western style interior designs. A room with wood accents is both rustic and cozy at the same time. Remember that using a lot of wood will make a room a bit darker so keep that in mind when choosing accent pieces.

For this theme to work, you want to make sure you have wood floors, wood accents on the wall, such as cabinets or wood doors, and a lot of wood furniture. Think sofa table, accent tables, and coffee table. Then, add in some cozy cowhide rugs in front of the fireplace and your room has a Western theme without having to use too many accent pieces. The cowhide rug alone will work just fine without being overwhelming.

5. Use an Accent Wall

You don’t have to have a room full of décor to create a Western feel. If you want to simplify things, go for using an accent wall only.

The best way to do this is to create a space that uses leather couches. Position a leather couch beside either an oversized matching leather chair or a small loveseat. Throw down a cowhide rug. Put a nice rustic coffee table on top of it.

Then, just focus on the accent wall. The accent wall is best suited for the wall behind the bigger couch. If this is a wood wall, even better but it doesn’t need to be. Choose a large, Western-inspired piece. This could be a photo or painting. It could even be an animal artifact, if you are so inclined.

Then, just flank the larger art piece with two smaller ones. These could be deer antlers, as an example. However, you can really choose any two pieces to accent the larger one. Just make sure they are the same and that they are much smaller than the bigger piece.
